Revenues and Benefits Training Services

We offer courses on all the major areas of Housing Benefit, and can adapt our training to focus on very specific aspects of legislation. All our courses cost £595 (+ VAT) per day.

Our popular offerings include the following:

THE ASSESSMENT OF EARNED INCOME IN HB

This course concentrates on the definition of earnings and in particular the correct assessment of average earned income and the date that changes should be applied to an award. It is particularly appropriate currently with the large number of VEP alerts, but the course also covers the correct assessment of earned income from self-employment and the tricky issue of when these changes are applied from; another area of interest to the DWP.

EXEMPT ACCOMMODATION AND SPECIALIST TENANCIES

With some residents of specialised accommodation still reliant on HB for their rent, there has never been a better time to become familiar with the labyrinthian rules around non- standard tenancies. This training will enable delegates to identify and calculate the correct classification, eligible rent and subsidy for such cases.

UNIVERSAL CREDIT FOR LOCAL AUTHORITIES

This course explains the main features and administration of the UC including its calculation and payment, but specifically focuses on the relationship and interaction between UC and benefits delivered by the LA. It covers the definitions of temporary, exempt and specified accommodation, clearly explains the mixed age couple rules and the assessment of UC in HB and the CTRS.

INTRODUCTION TO COUNCIL TAX

A one day course ideal for benefits staff moving to a generic working model, this course outlines the principles of the Council Tax Scheme through valuation, liability, exemptions, discounts, billing and enforcement.

INTRODUCTION TO HB, CTRS AND UC

A five day course which takes new starters in benefits, or customer services staff, right through the HB/CTRS scheme from the application process, occupancy, liability, the means test, eligible rents, calculations, effective dates, discretionary housing payments and over payments. Also included are overviews of the other welfare benefits and Universal Credit. Trainees finish the course with a good grounding in the role of the LA in welfare provision, and a thorough understanding of the principles of the benefits systems.

OTHER COURSES

We are also pleased to offer our well-proven traditional menu of courses including:

  • Housing Benefit Subsidy in detail
  • The calculation and recovery of HB Over payments
  • Persons from Abroad
  • Effective Dates in HB and CTRS
  • Self Employed claims in HB (including the calculation of notional tax and national insurance)
  • The assessment of Student claims in HB

"In these days of reduced budgets, and with the loss of experienced staff members, Local Authority Benefit Managers are facing a real challenge to maintain the high-quality of service provision that stakeholders expect."
