There is increasing evidence of the incidence of Fraud and Corruption in Local Government. It includes theft, false accounting, bribery, deception and collusion. It is also becoming more complex as a result of the transformation and outsourcing of services and the more widespread use of technology.

It has never been more important, in these times of reducing resources, to prevent and detect fraud.

Fraud can emerge anywhere in the organisation. It spans the theft of a few reams of paper for personal use through to siphoning off thousands of pounds from the Council’s accounts. Its detection is everybody’s responsibility.

Meritec provides a number of facilities which are designed to help combat fraud, including most especially:

• Focus On e-awareness packages which can be applied across a council to make staff more aware of the impact of fraud and what they can do to prevent it. Related modules spread awareness on risk management and information security.
• Datamatching services - using sophisticated techniques to match council information with financial services information to check for inconsistencies in benefits claims so that monies paid improperly may be recovered. The services are also highly effective in segmenting debtors’ accounts to identify best prospects for early recovery of monies owing.
